Here are the facts that only someone in the collision repair business can tell you:
Adjustors and Estimates
Many customers in need of collision repair will go to several shops for estimates before meeting with an adjustor to make sure that they are getting the best price or to ensure that the insurance company will cover all of the damage. Don’t waste your gas and time! A customer can collect ten estimates before meeting with an adjustor and none of these estimates will be considered. The only estimate that you will get paid for is the one from the insurance company adjustor or the Direct Repair Shop that writes it. There are two different guidelines that insurance companies use to pay estimates:
1. An adjustor will be sent to your home or work place for an estimate.
2. You will be giving a choice of where to go to get an estimate (Direct Repair Facility) from your insurance company.
What is a Direct Repair Facility?
Insurance companies have agreements with different auto body repair facilities and give these shops the authority to take photos and write estimates per their guidelines and will accept these estimates from that particular shop for your claim. However, you have the right to repair your vehicle anywhere you want.
Is D.C. Collision a Direct Repair Facility?
Yes. We have arrangements with several insurance companies but not all of them. If we are not a Direct Repair for your company, we can still repair your vehicle. We start repairs with your original insurance estimate and if there is any additional or missed damage that is related to your loss, we will negotiate with your insurance company.
Do I have to get my estimate at the collision repair shop my insurance company referred me to?
No, but it usually expedites the claim process. If it is inconvenient for you to go get an estimate on the other side of town, you may request that an insurance adjustor writes the estimate at your home or work place.
Do I have to have my vehicle repaired by a shop the insurance companies refer me to?
No. NY State prohibits insurance companies from steering. You have the right to repair your vehicle anywhere you want – but of course, we hope you choose D.C. Collision!
